From 'Kanoon Kya Karega'(his first film)to'Dus' his  last unfinshed film Mukul Anand's  cinematic shooting star career even in its brevity relates the life of a visionary dreamer.'Khudagawah'(the film that got him the best director award)was the only film shot in Afghanistan during the end of the Communist and Najibullah régimes era.And 'Dus'was built around authentic happenings which   ring true even today in not only the subcontinental context but also in  our global  scene
Some people are born  with an intuitive understanding of the present they are part of. Mukul  not only stepped into  History but felt History happening with his typical farsightedness ;
'Khudagawah'gave Mukul an actual taste of historical happenings and'Dus' revealed(reveals')his  potential for bringing the 'historic'feel  to his films whilst keeping track of it in the routine world. It could not have been otherwise with this 'enfant du siècle'
some scenes of 'Khudagawah'were actually shot from within antimissile plaines  with no other security for this enthusiastic director,  but Russian airmen holding his feet while he shot from above!The opening scenes of thisfilm have received acclaim  from simple spectators  and those who have cinematographic knowhow.
'Khudagawah' is of historical significance,since the war in Afghanistan stopped  for this shoot. I
t would be interesting if the ' making of  Khudagawah'were included in the Dvd.Mukul's interviews   in this respect  are of great historic insight(By the way ,where are these reels,who has them,why arent they included in the DVD) . He actually referred to  sites of  post-Khudagawah events   which coincided with similar shots in the film. He sensed the inanity of all war in the country during and after the making of his film and regretted certain political  involvements that would destroy the future of the country and of hitherto 'untouched-by -war'countries (SEE Afghanistan.html in index.html)
7th September 2004_Mukul 's work   8 years after  is still vibrant.His project ,his unfinished'DUS'has been revived albiet with the denial by the producer that it has no links with Mukul's visionary  work! What a pity his shots are not visible for the public!He was essentially an honest  hardworking craftsman .Honesty doesnt become  those who dont have the talent for it!
Mukul  was enitirely obsessed with  the conception and the realization of his last film'DUS',which is unfinished till today,because of his passing away during the making of the most expensively budgeted film in 1997. 'Dus'(10)was A Mukul S Anand brand of entertainment,the number representing perfection.  to quote  Mukul(May 1997) "  Although laden with political undercurrents ,I plan to work on it  as an entertainer ". He wa adopting a novel pluralist approach to Indian filmmaking The film revolved around the occupation of the CharareSharif mosque in Kashmir by an Afghan mercenary disguised as a Kashmiri militant. The saving of the shrine by Indian antiterrorist forces(10)and their relationships comprised a good part of the film.He rarely rested and had great ambitions regarding the climax shoot of this highly controversial film in Utah. On his return,he was faced with a socially tense situation,but he had  achieved shots and scaled technically  daunting  height(in bad weather) he was proud of. Despite an arduous situation he was editing till he breathed to the last,40 percent of his film,and its most difficult scenes had already been shot.
For  the people who've had a taste  of the galvanising quality of  the  music  of the album 'Dus'which was released  at Mukul's passing away and who've experienced the 'rushes 'of 'Dus',Mukul had  achieved what he was aiming at in his film,namely a new cinematic synthesis  in his  expression of diverse  forms in the making of  content. After grappling  with variety in media making namely ads. and  television serials 'Dus' revealed   a rich and   mobile  potential that had been tapped..Mukul had made at least a 150  ad.films ,feature films and television serials before
conceptualising  'his own name for entertainment'DUS'Mukul was the first film ad maker who made Pepsi and Coke commercials  the  same year. His other ad campaigns included  Philips,  with Aishwaraya Rai Ruf and Tuff Jeans  with Akshaye Kumar ,Reynolds Ball Pens  with Raveena  TandonAnd Nirma Beauty Soap. with Manisha Koirala(See Bhawana Somaya'Made Waves with his technical wizardry  THE HINDU Friday,September26 1997)
